I know it's a weird day to start a show, so make sure you check the date carefully. I had some ladies come all the way from St. George last year and missed it cause they assumed it started on a weekend!
It's easy to find! Take the one and only springville exit that is open that will take you into town. Don't get off on the Walmart exit (it's technicaly open, but only to the business area around walmart.) You will literally never make another turn! Off the freeway and drive straight to Netties. You get off the freeway, go thru the light at athe Chevron /McDonals station, go thru the neighborhood, and follow the road down to the stop sign, and my 1880's home is right there!. I'm on the corner of 4th East and 4th North in Springville. I have no signs posted around the town, as it is against the Springville's sign ordinance. So I am sorry about that. But I am ready and waiting for all of you to see what we have! You will love them!
I accept cash, checks and all the major credit cards, and your firstborn child if you want creative financing. I can't wait to see you all at the ball! We'll have some treats and alot of fun!

I found a gourd years ago and have felt like it was a match made in heaven. (A gourd is a name given to a hollow, dried shell of fruit, generally, used more for utilitarian uses and once dried will last forever.) I don’t usually open-up my gourds so you can still hear the seeds inside them. I love that. Each gourd has it’s own personality and I love discovering who they are and painting it out for all to see. Every one of my pieces is unique and different because there is not one gourd that is exactly like another.

My name is Calvin Close, little brother to the famous artist Renette Barnett. I started painting about 10 years ago after browsing through countless art galleries and not being able to afford their prices! The more I browsed, the more I thought, "I can paint that." Thus started the budding art career of Calvin Close, father of 5, advertising salesman by profession, and bishop in between! Painting has been an ongoing love affair for me, although my wife comes first. I started out by copying other well known artist, like Maynard Dixon and LeConte Stewart. This has helped me learn technique and improve my skills as a mostly self-taught artist. I am a wife and mother of 5 fantastic children. After getting burned out in the business and then education fields I began my at-home business of designing gifts and accessories for those who love to buy handmade. Three years ago I started by making handbags and scripture bags. Last November I expanded into selling mixed-media jewelry and magnets. Which has mainly consisted of my glass tile pendants. I've sold over 2,000 of them worldwide and I get a kick out of selling to someone in a country that I haven't sold to before. My designs include themes such as Flowers, Love and Friends, Twilight, Motivational, Religious, Nature, Patterns, Art and Holidays. My name is Kevin Stuflick. I started Profiles Art and Frame in Springville in the summer 2000. We originally started with two employees and three customers. Today we have sixteen employees and 1200 customers nation wide. Our products include all aspects of custom framing, ready made photo frames, framed mirrors, photography, and much more. What makes Profiles Art and Frame unique is our in house mill and finishing department. We make 90% of our molding from scratch milling our own designs and hand finishing each frame. I really love the look of bows and flower clips, but am not willing to pay what they are selling them for in stores, so I started making my own. It became somewhat of an obsession, and it got to a point where I needed to sell them to make space for all the new bows and clips! I was laid off at the beginning of the year, so this is what I fill my time with now.

There is nothing more I love than seeing the joy on a girl's face while she dances around in her new tutu, or is wearing one of my clips that she loves. And, I love doing it for a lot cheaper than you can get it anywhere else!

I've been an artist for as long as I can remember. I've always taken art in school and was a fine art major in College. It's what I love to do- in what ever form that takes. I've also studied photography and graphic design and love to knit, crochet and do crafts. Even baking is an artistic outlet for me! My style is constantly evolving as I experiment and learn more every day.

Sweet & Simple Studios is my first attempt at branding myself as an artist and I'm looking forward to where it takes me! Most of my work is either digital prints (cards and pictures) or acrylic paintings. I love color and simplicity and I think that shows in my artwork and in my life. I'm a mother of 2 with one on the way and so far that's been my favorite, and most important, work.

Doodling turned to drawing, drawing turned to art and design classes, which eventually bloomed into my little Business:

Mogen Creative. Named in honor of my daughter, Imogen, as she was the inspiration behind my new series of paintings focusing on family life. I leave the subjects faces blank so the viewer can project their loved ones faces and expressions, rather than be stuck with the features I would have drawn.

At the boutique you will find a few of my original oil paintings, lots of prints, and coupons for custom digital illustrations (like my caricature).

I'm in my 24th year(or is it my 23rd? I've lost track) of gnome making! Wow, has it been that long? I thought I would quit all this 'playing with dolls' when I made it to my 25th year, but once you get the disease of creating these little people, it's hard to find a cure. So for now I guess I will continue on til I am an old woman! I love what I do! Funny, but I can just see myself as a little old lady hunched over my sewing machine, still creating.....
For those of you unfamiliar with my work, let me tell you a little about my dolls... I make each gnome one at a time in my workshop here in Springville. I make their little faces of latex, so they feel a bit like skin- soft and smooth. It's a great product, but really just awful to work with. There are 9 steps to creating each face! My gnomes range in size from 18 inches to 33 inches for my witches. I make traditional Gnomes, teeny gnomies (6 inches tall), Santas, 'Miss Gnomers', fairies, witches and any special order you can think up.
I make all their clothing by hand. I love detail, embroidery and layers of fabric, so there are always surprises on each doll. I love to use bits of old lace, and fabrics with a past life. Old wools and velvets... mmmm.....delicious!
I have always created something ever since I was just a little girl. I sold painted rocks to my friends when I was just 10! The photos below are just a small sample of my work. They are mostly Miss Gnomers. I will post some more of my boys soon. .

misnomer [miss-no-mer]~ a wrong or unsuitable name or term for somebody or something.
Miss Gnomers are the girly gnomes who really are a just trying to sneak in under the guise of being a gnome, thus they're aptly named. Gnomes are dwarf-like creatures from Norse folklore. They live in the forests, 'gnimbly' dancing on the grass, and 'gnestle' amongst the toadstools. These Miss gnomers are probably too dressed up for all that, but they are so dang sweet!

This is Grace. She was just shipped off to her new home in Holladay, Utah. I hope she is happy there. I miss you already Gracie!
Oh Sweet Audrey...Isn't she just a fresh breath of Springtime? She's been out picking young peas from the garden...and now she's just waiting for a ride to your house...

Mary, Mary quite contrary is so delicious....With chocolate brown, and bonnie blue spots...She is too cute for her own good. She is very fashion conscious also, wearing just a smidge of soft and chic animal- print mohair at her bosom!

Holly is my favorite.... so sorry to the other Miss Gnomers, but just look at that face!! She's just so adorable, 'gnestled' up in the flowering crab tree. Don't you just want to squeeze the stuffin' out of her?

It's Mother Goose upon her gander! She's ready to snuggle up with your little ones and read a good bedtime story. Her cloak is a lovely shade of wonderful mossy green, with heavenly satin lining in the same shade, made from a old ladies coat I found at a flea market. I couldn't stand to let it stay in that shop, and even more I wished it was my size ( itty bitty little ladies back then!) so, I just closed my eyes and cut away!

Not only am I organizing the Checkered Umbrella Boutique, but I'm also helping to manage the Startup Princess Touch Point Event Boutique! It will be held directly after the event around 4:30pm. It's all women who attended the event doing sort of a "show and tell and sell" of their product or service. Do you want to be in the Startup Princess boutique or know someone who does? Please be on time for set-up to ensure that we start on time and for take-down cause we need to get to bed on time since we will probably be exhausted.

Display

Vendors should provide their own tables and display items. Your booth size can consist of 1-2 typical banquets tables-approximately 2x8) depending on your need.
This is an outdoor garden boutique, so be prepared for rain or shine with an easy-up or market umbrella. Easy-ups should be 10X10 or smaller and may be shared with another vendor.
Please let us know beforehand if you will need any power for your booth and we will be happy to provide it for you.

Vendor number and Labeling

Each vendor will be assigned a vendor number, which must be visible on all inventory in order to receive payment for items sold. Make sure your tags and vendor number are secure and will not become detached from items. We want you to get your money!

Costs & Fees

The entrance fee is $30 and a 15% commission is withheld.
If you plan to share a booth space, one vendor must pay the initial $30 and each additional vendor must pay $15. Also, we will only issue your group a single Vendor ID and a single check at the end of the show so you will be responsible for dividing up your dough.
There will be a central checkout counter and money will be distributed within 10 days following the boutique.

Restocking your booth

Feel free to stop by your booth at anytime to restock or tiddy-up. If you would like to leave extra stock stored under your banquet tables please do so. We are more than happy to keep and eye on your booth and restock for you.

Liabilities/ Security

We will do our best to make sure your items remain safe and well cared for. However, in the rare event an item walks away unpaid for, we cannot be held responsible.
Overnight security will be provided, so feel free to leave your items. You may wish to store your items underneath your banquet table overnight or cover/enclose your booth with tarps or blankets just for extra precaution.

About Us

The checkered umbrella boutique was founded by Nettie Barnett and her daughters who were all energized to release their creative wiggles. It all began one Sunday night while sitting around the dinner table contemplating what we could do to share our arty wits and invite others to join us…and out popped the checkered umbrella garden boutique! We call ourselves the Checkered Umbrella because it encompasses a potpourri of different artists with a common goal...to create and sell great art, all under one umbrella! Nettie’s back yard is delightful and inviting; with plenty of parking and it will be a wonderful venue for spotlighting different artists. We are looking for talented participants, so if you are one of them, or know of someone who is, please let us know. We want to make it an unique and enchanting show. So come and see what is under the umbrella!

Nettie Barnett, founder of Nettie’s Gnomes and the Checkered Umbrella, has been creating her darling gnome creatures for 25 years out of her home in Springville, Utah. Her gnomes have evolved over the years from simple Christmas elves to fairies, girly-girls, Santa’s, and her famous witches. She has been featured on channel 4 “Good things Utah”, Channel 5 News, Salt Lake Magazine, and the Salt Lake Tribune. She also is an accomplished mural artist and designer and her murals have been featured in Utah Parade of Homes in 2003 and 2004. She is the mother of six fantastic children and grandmother of two adorable grandchildren…soon to be three!

Linnea (Nea) Barnett, founder of My Dear Clementine, has been creating alongside her mother from age 15, producing the miniature version of dolls called Nea’s Gnomes. She has recently expanded her shop to include jewelry, journals, headbands, and other girly nick-knacks. She loves vintage fashion and old-fashioned life hence the name Clementine…, which she hopes one day to name one of her daughters. In addition, she is an avid musician and has been performing on the violin for 12 years. She currently teaches music at Reagan Academy charter school and loves to dress up in costume of her concerts!

Laura Barnett recently founded her shop "Simple & Sweet Studios" and is an avid artist and homemaker. She is our IT girl and much of the design I.Q. behind the checkered umbrella operation. Laura has been creating original artwork for many years and has recently created a new line of magical children’s art, which will be featured in our show. She is a contributor for the blog “Sweet Life in the Valley” and has her own blog "Sweet & Simple Studios". Laura and her husband Karsten reside in Orem, Utah and are the proud parents of two adorable children, Aiden and Emma, and have another on the way.
